Consolidation Doesn’t Work When Forced

How many times did we hear Fr. Radetski say that consolidation just doesn’t work if it is forced?  How many times did he say it needs to be voluntary?  How many stories did we listen to about the problems that the forced consolidations at his former assignments created?   After all the times he said that a forced consolidation will fail, why would he now make this decision to force a consolidation of St. Dominic and Holy Family Schools?

The Archdiocese has followed the same pattern. In a joint North Side Parish Council meeting in fall of 2010, Mark Kemmeter of the Milwaukee Archdiocese, said that collaboration should be increased but that consolidation isn’t necessary.  He said it is a process, doesn’t happen overnight and that we should work toward a win/win where both parties will buy into change and be happy with the outcome.  He said there would be public hearings and forums.

Yet here we are, with a sudden announcement on March 2, 2011, that we will be consolidating our schools in Fall of 2012.  There has been no process, no public hearings and forums, no buy in by school staff, parents or children.  This definitely is not a win/win for St. Dominic Parish or School as the choice of a parish school for the families of St. Dominic School will be eliminated and the parish will lose members.

I feel lied to by both Fr. Radetski and the Milwaukee Archdiocese.

How Did This Get Started?

Many people have received misinformation which has led them to believe that this consolidation is being pursued under the direction of the Archdiocese.  This is untrue.

Fr. Jim Connell and Fr. John Radetski requested the Archdiocese to perform a study of Holy Family and St. Dominic Schools and provide potential scenarios.  There was no directive made by the Archdiocese that these scenarios must be adopted now or in the future.  There was no directive that these were the only potential scenarios.

The Archdiocese has made it clear that this was a local decision.

There are no dollarizations of the costs or the benefits relating to these scenarios that have been made available.  In a joint School Committee meeting, the lack of a dollarized cost/benefit analysis was questioned.  Fr. Connell said they don’t need this analysis as they know that the headcount reduction would be six figures.

When asked how much the “six figures” were, he didn’t have a number.  When asked whether the decline in tuition, Sunday contributions from members who leave the parish, volunteer efforts, etc. outweigh the “six figures”, he said they weren’t “going there”.

Below are the only documents provided to the School Committee and the Parish Council by Fr. Radetski.  Note that he did not provide any documentation to the Finance Committee, did not request a discussion of closing the school to be on the agenda and came to the Finance meeting 50 minutes late.  The below documents were shared at the Finance meeting anyway as some members had the information with them from prior meetings.  This topic should have been an important agenda item with thorough analysis at the Finance, School and Parish Council meetings but it wasn’t on the agenda for any of them.
